Claude Code for SEO: What Actually Works in 2026
I've spent the last six months building Claude Code skills for SEO tasks. Some ideas worked brilliantly. Others were a waste of time. Here's what I learned.
What Claude Code is good at for SEO
Data analysis. Give it a CSV with 2,000 keywords and ask it to cluster them semantically. It's faster than any tool I've used and the clusters are actually good — not just keyword-match groupings.
Report generation. After running a Screaming Frog crawl, Claude Code can parse the output and write a prioritised issue list. What used to take me an afternoon now takes 15 minutes.
Content gap analysis. Ask it to compare your article against the top 5 results and identify what's missing. The output is directional, not perfect, but it's a very fast first pass.
Where it struggles
Real-time data. Claude Code has no internet access by default. If you need live rankings, you need to bring the data yourself (GSC export, SF crawl, etc.).
Nuanced judgement calls. "Should we merge these two pages or differentiate them?" is a strategy question that needs human context. Claude Code gives you the data. You make the call.
The skills approach
The problem with using Claude Code for SEO ad-hoc is inconsistency. Every time you start a new task, you're re-explaining context, methodology, and output format.
Skills fix this. A skill is a reusable instruction set that activates automatically when you describe what you want to do. You write the methodology once, Claude follows it every time.
